Health Conditions, Medication and Hospitalisation Preferences of Elderly in Kerala

V. P. SanithaJ. K. ParidaI. C. Awasthi.

Indian Journal of Human Development 13(3), December 2019.

Abstract : This article intends to study the health conditions, medication and hospitalisation preferences, and the determinants of medication preferences of the elderly population in Kerala. It is based on the primary data collected from a sample of 801 households and three old-age homes (OAHs) in three districts of the state, namely Kozhikode, Ernakulum and Trivandrum.

The evidence suggests that the elderly population are vulnerable to various chronic diseases and they tend to spend more on healthcare. In the absence of public provision of effective healthcare services in Kerala, the elderly spend out-of-pocket on health expenses and choose private hospitals for effective and better treatment.

However, those who prefer government hospitals mostly belong to poor and marginalised groups, including the inmates of OAHs. With regard to the type of medicines, the elderly often prefer Ayurveda and Homeopathy to Allopathy medicines. Based on these findings, we suggest that the government intervention in terms of more health care facilities and health insurance schemes for the elderly is necessary to improve their quality of life.

Economic Independence and Social Security among India’s Elderly

Srinivas Goli, Bheemeshwar Reddy A, K S James, Venkatesh Srinivasan.

EPW, Vol. 54, Issue No. 39, 28 Sep, 2019.

Abstract: Given that a majority of India’s elderly population lacks adequate social security or old-age pension, India needs a robust social security system that addresses decisive ageing challenges such as decent living arrangements, economic independence and social support to ensure active ageing.

India needs to facilitate interstate convergence in old-age pensions under social security schemes for the elderly population, and revisit and re-evaluate existing multisectoral policy initiatives aimed towards their welfare.

Factors associated with the life satisfaction amongst the rural elderly in Odisha, India

  • Rinshu Dwivedi and Jalandhar Pradhan
  • Health and Quality of Life Outcomes, December 2015

  • Life Satisfaction (LS) is an indicator of subjective well-being (SWB) among the elderly, and is directly associated with health and mortality. Present study deals with the factors associated with the LS among the rural elderly in Odisha, India.

A cross-sectional survey using multi-stage random sampling procedure was conducted among elderly (60+ years) in Bargarh district of Odisha. The survey was conducted among 310 respondents. Hierarchical regression analysis was used to assess the adjusted effect of various socio-economic, demographic, health conditions (physical and mental), social support and effects of multi-morbidity on LS.

Cognitive health was the most influential factor in determining LS among both men (β = 0.327) and women (β = 0.329). Individual’s social support also plays an influential role in LS among rural elderly. Elderly who are living alone and have any sort of disability and had low score of activities of daily living (ADL) have also reported significantly lower perceived LS for both the genders.

It is necessary to analyze and identify the major factors which can improve upon the level of LS among the elderly population. Better understanding of these factors can help in removing the superfluous anxiety of old age in the mindset of people which is pervading in the society.
